Flexibility

Ekihouse’s main characteristic is the flexibility. Facades work differently to guarantee a perfect adaptation to the exterior climatic conditions by providing diverse combinations of each one. North and south facades are double layer, and they can convined differently in order to adecuate to the external conditions. These facades can be storaged completly in boxes situated in the borders, opening the house to the terrace. The aim is not to have a clear delimitation of inside-outside spaces, so when the double skin is completely opened we obtain a bigger open space. The interior space is also flexible, the only fixed rooms are the bathroom and the kitchen, which are situated in both sides of the house. So, the space is going to be changed according to the user’s preferences, thereby the same space can be a bedroom or a big room for party celebrations.

Passive strategies

During winter, thanks to the big glazing surfaces orientated to the south, the solar direct radiation heats inner space. At night, the big glazing surfaces of northern and southern facades are closed by isolated metal panels for maintaining the inside temperature. During summer, however, the strategy is the opposite. Due to the high temperatures in Madrid, the roof is extended to the north and south. These cantileveres avoid the direct solar radiation in the house.
