final project

DuranGO / DENONA is a project from 1/5000 to 1/5.

Durango’s urban fabric has been divided by the railway the last 130 years. The city shows 4 negative aspects: wall effect, morphologically non completed urban pattern, degradation of the city and pauses in traffic and pedestrians’ flows. Since December 17th, 2012 the train goes underground. Now the city has a unique opportunity thanks to the recovered surfaces to meet the needs of its inhabitants. But there is not a plan to explit this situation. The local municipality has always focused on the large area situated in the center and they have forgotten the rest of the city.

So my project aims to develop a plan for all the new axis that helps to unite the north and south parts of the city. Cities have traditionally been a stack of layers that have been consolidating slowly. This project aims to mimic these processes. Therefore, the project is developed in phases. Each phase can be transformed or modified as a function of changes in the needs of the citizens.

Subsequently I continued with the development of one of the pioneer buildings that helps with the urban transformation, DENONA (meaning “everybody’s” in Basque language).
The main objetive of this building project was to research on relations of spaces and their privacies, and how different uses can create synergistic spaces. The building is composed of 4 individual volumes that meet in a shared platform, under which the new urban flows continue across the building and covered public spaces are created.
All these relations are shown in a complex result of spaces combination in the mentioned shared platform.
Chosen construction solutions are industrialized, and they want to emphasize the privacy level of each space by differentiating materials in facades and pavements.
